Role

Lead UI/UX Designer & Magento Front-End Developer

The Context and the Strategic Challenge

As a dominant force in the Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina retail markets, City Furniture requires a digital infrastructure capable of matching its massive physical footprint. In 2010, the company undertook a significant digital transformation, migrating to the robust Magento enterprise platform. The challenge was to bridge the gap between heavy IT backend architecture and a frictionless, visually inspiring consumer experience.

The strategic hurdle was "Catalog Overwhelm." With thousands of SKUs ranging from sofas to home decor, users could easily experience decision fatigue. Working alongside City Furniture’s corporate IT team, my objective was to design a front-end UI that didn't just list products, but contextualized them. We needed to translate the curated experience of walking through a physical showroom into a highly optimized digital sales funnel.

Strategic Deliverables

  • Enterprise E-commerce UI/UX
  • Magento Front-End Integration
  • Shoppable Landing Page Architecture
  • Thematic Merchandising Design
  • Grid-Based Visual Hierarchies
  • Corporate IT Team Collaboration

Visual Merchandising and Cross-Selling UX

To optimize the purchasing journey, I developed a modular, grid-based template system that allowed high-resolution lifestyle imagery to take center stage. Instead of isolated product shots, I spearheaded the design of "Shoppable Environments"—landing pages that showcased fully furnished rooms. This UX strategy allowed customers to effortlessly click and purchase complementary items presented within the same visual context.

Furthermore, I introduced a navigation architecture based on thematic and color-coordinated collections. By restructuring how the Magento backend displayed the inventory to the user, we significantly reduced search friction. This approach not only elevated the brand's modern aesthetic but actively guided the consumer toward bundled purchases, leveraging design directly as a tool for revenue generation.

The Result: Scalable E-commerce Growth

The collaboration with City Furniture's IT team resulted in a powerful, visually cohesive e-commerce platform that successfully translated their physical retail dominance into the digital space. By implementing UX strategies like shoppable environments and thematic collections, we significantly improved product discoverability and facilitated an increase in Average Order Value (AOV) through intuitive cross-selling. The project stands as a prime example of how front-end design can transform a standard Magento catalog into an immersive retail experience.
